Sanitary Clamp (Tri-Clamp)

A hinged clamp that provides leak-proof and sterile connections for stainless steel piping in the food, dairy, and pharmaceutical industries. Designed to examine tool-less assembly, CIP compliance, and gasket preload principles.

Use Case

This structure is used for process engineering training, food/pharma piping design, gasket compression analysis, and CIP (Clean-In-Place) procedures.

Tool-less Quick Assembly

Explains the principle of tightening the wing nut using only hand force, without the need for wrenches, as sanitary lines must be frequently disassembled for cleaning.

Wedge Action Clamping

Demonstrates how the angled geometry on the inside of the clamp pushes the pipe flanges together, crushing the Teflon/Silicone gasket to create a seal.

CIP Compliance & Sterilization

Highlights the importance of having no exposed threads, crevices, or sharp corners (dead legs) on the wetted surfaces to prevent bacterial growth.

Technical Documentation

Sanitary Clamp (Tri-Clamp) - Detailed Specifications

Below is the comprehensive engineering breakdown of each component within the assembly. This data includes standard material selections, ISO tolerances, surface finishes, and critical engineering notes required for manufacturing and assembly.

Upper Clamp Half

Clamping Element

Material SpecificationAISI 304 or 316L Stainless Steel | Mfg: Investment Casting
Surface FinishElectropolished (Ra < 0.8 µm)
Critical TolerancesInternal flange angle precision

The upper semi-circle that wraps around the pipe flanges and applies the clamping force. It features a slot on the right side for the swing bolt.

Engineering Note

Corrosion is strictly prohibited in the pharma and food industries. Therefore, parts are made from 316L stainless steel (containing high nickel and molybdenum) and electropolished to a mirror finish to prevent bacterial adhesion.

Lower Clamp Half

Clamping Element

Material SpecificationAISI 304 / 316L Stainless Steel
Surface FinishElectropolished
Critical TolerancesHinge pin bore concentricity

The other jaw forming the lower half of the system, which houses the swing bolt.

Engineering Note

It is critical that the upper and lower halves wrap the flanges perfectly to apply even pressure to the gasket. Uneven compression causes the gasket to extrude on one side or leak.

Hinge Pins / Rivets

Pivot Element

Material SpecificationStainless Steel
Surface FinishSmooth
Critical TolerancesPrecision clearance fit

The riveted pins connecting the upper and lower halves on the left side, allowing the clamp to open and close.

Engineering Note

Compared to single-hinge designs, double-hinge designs allow the jaws to open more in parallel, making it easier to install the clamp over thick hose barbs or heavy flanges.

Wing Nut

Clamping Element

Material SpecificationStainless Steel
Surface FinishSmooth
Critical TolerancesErgonomic wing design

The winged nut threaded onto the swing bolt, allowing the operator to tighten the clamp using hand force.

Engineering Note

Using a wrench to tighten bolts on food lines introduces the risk of transferring dirt from the tools to the line. Wing nuts ensure hygienic operation by being only finger-tightened. Since over-tightening can crush and destroy the gasket, the nut should only be tightened enough to provide adequate preload.
